Before I give my opinion on the protests let me tell you a little bit about the Srilankan Civil war.
The Sri Lankan Civil War is the name given to the ongoing conflict on the island-nation of Sri Lanka. Since July 23, 1983, there has been on-and-off civil war, predominantly between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE, also known as the Tamil Tigers), a separatist armed organization which fights for the creation of an independent state named Tamil Eelam in the north and the east of the island. Over 80,000 people have been officially listed as killed in the war since 1983. As one of the world's deadliest ongoing armed conflicts, it has caused significant adversity to the population, environment and the economy of the country. The tactics employed by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have resulted in the organization being banned as a terrorist organization in 32 countries, including the United States, Japan, Brazil, Australia, the nations of the European Union, and Canada.
Tamil Diaspora communities around the world have recently been actively protesting the Tamil civilian casualties in Northern Province, Sri Lanka and the War in general. Active protests have occurred in the major and capital cities in India, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany and the United States. The collective objective of the protests is to persuade world national leaders to stop the civil war and bring a permanent ceasefire under a worldwide-initiative and internationally coordinated diplomatic strategy. Protests are still occurring in most cities, notably Toronto, Sydney, Chennai and London.
NOW with that said let me tell you what I feel about all this.
10th May, 2009 (Sunday) I was coming back with my Brother and Sister-in-law from Toronto to back home Brampton. We encountered the scene of our life time. If you have ever seen an Action packed Hollywood movie, then you must have seen how Cops arrive to the crime scene with their emergency alarms on and flashing lights on the top of car. Exact thing happened that day. Suddenly we saw Plenty of Police vehicles going to a certain direction and whole traffic stopped with no one knowing what was happening? My brother took another route and we found out many roads were blocked by Cops. After taking many routes we finally reached a spot from where we saw a mind blowing scene. Gardiner Express Highway, which is one of the main and busiest highways in Toronto was blocked by Tamil's. It was blocked for more than 6 hours that day and that also during peak hours. I experienced the inconvenience caused because of that but that was nothing compared to those who were taking the highway to reach their destinations.
What I am trying to say over here is that it's not bad to protest but making other people suffer for that is not at all a right way. Protestor's can always ask for help from other countries but they should not force them to do something. It's like you are asking to create Peace back in your country but doing the exact opposite in the country you are living. I was surprised to see that Tamil's were causing inconvenience to the very citizens of the Country they are asking help from.
After that they have been doing some peace protests but I guess that cannot erase the incident of what was done on the highway. It leaves a bad impression. I don't know why people don't consider that by performing this kind of action they are almost closing the doors to enter into this country for other people of their community.
I hope this from the bottom of my heart that this War will be over soon and the justice will be done.
I am sure that people in Srilanka are facing hell right now for which we can't even say "we understand" because we are not going through that but that does not give anyone the right to disturb the situation in any other country.
Please note that this post is NOT against Tamil community or to hurt anyone but it’s about that one incident only. This is just what I feel. Your view can be completely different.
